Maine Township assessor offering free help with assessment appeals

Des Plaines- and Park Ridge-area homeowners seeking to appeal recent property assessments can get help from Maine Township Assessor Susan Moylan Krey through July 15.

The Cook County assessor’s office sent reassessment notices to all Maine Township property owners earlier this month. Homeowners can appeal the assessments if they feel the estimates, which are used to figure property tax bills, are incorrect.

The help being offered is free for Maine Township residents.

“One of my office’s primary responsibilities is to assist homeowners who have questions about their assessment notice (or) the overall appeal process, or if they wish to file an appeal,” Krey said in a news release. “We have hired additional staff to help with the high volume of inquiries and appeals that we expect.”

The July 15 deadline allows the assessor’s staff to send paperwork to the county by its July 18 deadline, according to the release.

Homeowners don’t need to visit the township office in Park Ridge to file appeals or get help finding comparable properties for their appeals. They can request assistance by completing an appeal intake form available at mainetown.com.

The form also is available at the office, 1700 Ballard Road. It’s open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Submitting the form authorizes the assessor’s office to complete and submit an appeal. Once an appeal has been processed, a homeowner will receive a confirmation email from the township.

All forms must be received by 4 p.m. July 15.
