Roselle awarded $3M grant for Irving Park Road pedestrian, bicyclist upgrades

The village of Roselle has been awarded a $3 million Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) grant to complete pedestrian and bicycle path improvements in the Irving Park Road (Route 19) corridor, elevating the total grant funding received for village infrastructure improvements over the past four years to $8 million.

Irving Park Road is Roselle’s main east-west arterial that connects residential areas to shops, businesses, and the Metra train station.

Creating pedestrian and bicycle path improvements is a key element of the village’s 2016 comprehensive plan and was studied in more detail in the 2024 Irving Park Road Corridor Study.

Irving Park Road corridor improvements will include:

• 1.7 mile on- and off-street bike path from Marion Street to Maple Avenue.

• ADA sidewalk improvements and new pedestrian lighting from Marion Street to Maple Avenue.

• ADA and other pedestrian crossing improvements at Roselle Road and Granville Avenue, and at Park Street and Irving Park Road.

• Shared use path with new pedestrian lighting along Irving Park Road to the eastern and western village limits

• Aesthetic improvements to beautify the corridor and improve separation between pedestrians and vehicles

These corridor improvements will significantly improve safety by separating pedestrians and cyclists from vehicle traffic, reducing the risk of collisions, and increasing visibility of nonmotorized traffic to drivers.

The 2025 grant for Irving Park Road enhancements is the second recent ITEP grant awarded to the village to improve bike paths and walking routes in Roselle.

In 2024, the village was awarded a $2.9 million grant for a shared-use bike path and pedestrian bridge that will connect downtown Main Street to the Roselle Metra station, which is adjacent to Irving Park Road.

Together, these ITEP grant-supported projects will greatly improve connectivity around Roselle and provide improved access to the DuPage regional trail.

In addition to the ITEP grants, the village of Roselle has been awarded over $8 million in grants since 2021 to improve infrastructure and community safety:

• $1,250,000 in Community Project Funding grants from the office of U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi for stormwater improvement design ($750,000) and the municipal campus renovation ($500,000

• $380,000 from Cook County for the purchase of meridian barriers for special event protection ($190,000) and the design of Roselle Road ADA and pedestrian improvements ($190,000)

• $350,000 from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for stormwater improvements on Rosemont Avenue ($250,000) and the Plum Grove Road bridge resurfacing project ($100,000)
