Pedal power: Schaumburg gears up for a month of biking fun
The village of Schaumburg encourages the public to celebrate Bike Month, which is being recognized by the village in June. A variety of fun activities will be offered, including solo and group bike events.
Fahrrad Tour von Schaumburg
The popular Fahrrad Tour von Schaumburg returns this June and is open to the public. The event, which is sponsored by the Village of Schaumburg and the Schaumburg Park District, will kick off at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, from Meineke Recreation Center, 220 E. Weathersfield Way. Participants will ride in a 5-mile police-escorted tour, utilizing both on and off-street bike paths throughout neighborhoods and parks surrounding Meineke Recreation Center. Immediately following the ride, a picnic-style lunch will be served. Before participating, all riders must register online and sign a liability waiver on the park district’s website at bit.ly/42Q2k1X. Helmets are encouraged. This event is geared toward confident riders who are comfortable riding alongside traffic and other cyclists.
Business Bike Classic
Schaumburg businesses and organizations are encouraged to form teams of four and participate in the seventh annual Business Bike Classic where riders will record their bicycle mileage for all bicycling activity during the month of June. Mileage from spinning and stationary bikes is also eligible. To participate, teams must submit the Business Bike Classic registration form on the village’s website at bit.ly/vosbbc. Results will be ranked for the top teams in the novice, intermediate, and advanced tiers (totaling up to 650 miles, 651-1,500 miles, and 1,501-plus miles, respectively). Prizes will be awarded to the top individuals and top teams in each tier, and the team with the most miles in the entire competition will be presented with the traveling Business Bike Classic trophy.
Family and Friends Bike Classic
The Family and Friends Bike Classic is returning for the second year, featuring a challenge encouraging residents within the village to gather teams of four and record all bicycling activity during the month of June. All four riders must reside in Schaumburg. To participate, teams must submit the Family and Friends Bike Classic registration form on the village’s website at bit.ly/vosffbc. Cumulative results will be ranked, and prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.
Bike to Metra Day
The village is bringing back Bike to Metra Day on Thursday, June 26, which promotes bicycling as a commuting option and raises awareness for commuters who ride to and from work. This event will also highlight amenities at the Schaumburg Metra Station including Johnny's Coffee Shop, 40 free enclosed bicycle lockers, and 48 additional covered bicycle parking spaces. No registration is required for this activity.
