Rockford man charged with stealing vehicle from outside Schaumburg police station
A Rockford man is set to appear in court Tuesday after officials say he stole a car from outside the Schaumburg police station, then crashed it into another vehicle about two miles away.
Marocain Lubembela, 22, faces charges including unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving on a revoked license, leaving the scene of traffic accident and improper traffic lane usage stemming from the events Saturday afternoon, police said.
According to police, a man they later identified as Lubembela stole the vehicle, which had been left running outside the station, at about 3:50 p.m. Saturday. The vehicle’s owner was standing nearby at the time.
The man then drove east on Schaumburg Road, crossed into oncoming traffic near Lambert Drive and collided with a westbound vehicle, police said.
Debris from the crash struck two additional vehicles, but no injuries were reported and the suspect was taken into custody, according to police.
Lubembela later was released pending Tuesday’s court appearance at the Cook County courthouse in Rolling Meadows.
