Lyric Opera premiere

“The Listeners,” a new adults-only work by Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek that pairs traditional opera with videography and projections, makes its Chicago premiere at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, 20 N. A co-commission by Lyric and Philadelphia operas and the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, “The Listeners” is about a schoolteacher “whose idyllic suburban life is shattered by the arrival of a persistent hum, an unplaceable droning sound that only certain people can hear,” which leads to the establishment of a cult that a so-called prophet attempts to control.
