John J. Matuszak: 2025 candidate for Mount Prospect village board

Bio

Office Sought: Mount Prospect village board

City: Mount Prospect

Age: 62

Occupation: Retired, General Counsel, U.S. Navy

Previous offices held: Mount Prospect village trustee since 2009

What is the most serious issue your community will face in the coming years and how should the village board respond to it?

The most serious issue we will face is the aging of the baby boomers who reside in our community. An aging population requires additional services which require additional resources. These residents easily become victims of crimes, have health issues as well as social issues. The village has developed a robust human services department to support these residents and their families. I view this a continuing challenge for the next 4 to 5 years and will work toward continuing these vital services.

How would you describe the state of your community's finances? What should be the top priorities for spending during the next few years? Are there areas of spending that need to be curtailed?

We have in place a strong reserve fund. We have lowered the property tax levy for the last two years. Our finances are extremely strong and I expect we can weather any economic downturn without a decrease in services.

What do you see as the most important infrastructure project the community must address? Why and how should it be paid for? Conversely, during these uncertain economic times, what project(s) can be put on the back burner?

I see street lightning as the most important infrastructure issue. The residents want better street lighting. If elected, I want to start a dialog with the residents to determine the best methods to provide better street lighting. We will also have to align the costs associated with street lighting with our financial resources.

Describe your experience working in a group setting to determine policy. What is your style in such a setting to reach an agreement and manage local government? Explain how you think that will be effective in producing effective actions and decisions with your village board.

The residents have watched me work in a group setting for over a decade, and they can judge me accordingly. The most important attribute for success in a group setting is listening. I am a good listener. If there is a division about the best way forward, look for grounds of consensus and then work toward resolving the differences.

What makes you the best candidate for the job?

My experience as a trustee, education, and commitment to public service are my strengths for this position.

What’s one good idea you have to better the community that no one is talking about yet?

I seek to begin a thorough discussion with residents about street lighting.
