Tanya Karner: 2025 candidate for Antioch Elementary District 34 board

Bio

Office sought: Antioch Elementary District 34 board (Vote for 4)

City: Antioch

Age: 52

Occupation: Assistant superintendent

Previous offices held: None

Why are you running for this office? Is there a particular issue that motivates you?

I am running for office because I have children in the district. I want to ensure the school district thrives for years to come because I believe a great education is the most important tool a child can have.

What is the role of the school board in setting and monitoring the curriculum?

The role of the school board is to approve district curriculum policy, ensure alignment with the state learning standards, to ensure curriculum meets legal requirements, to analyze student performance data and to approve the budget for curriculum development, and teacher training all of which the Superintendent brings forth to the board.

Are there curriculum issues within the district that you feel need particular attention from the board?

No, from what I can tell the school district is meeting the standards set forth by Illinois School Code.

How do you view your role in confronting policy or curriculum controversies: provide leadership even if unpopular, give a voice to constituents — even ones with whom you disagree, or defer to state authorities?

My role as a board member is to ensure that all decisions made are legal and follow the law. As a school board member, I would ensure that all stakeholder views are heard.

Describe your experience working in a group setting to determine policy. What is your style in such a setting to reach an agreement and manage school district policy? Explain how you think that will be effective in producing effective actions and decisions for your school board.

In my experience working in a group setting to determine policy I listen to all viewpoints ensuring everyone is heard keeping students at the forefront always. I then research existing policy that has been approved for school districts. I then seek to work with the team to find the best path forward for students.

I believe this is effective because you must consider all viewpoints and ensure you are legally compliant.

What is your assessment of the school district's diversity and equity efforts? Do you support the continuation or enhancement of such programs, of would you rather see them diminished. Please explain your reasoning.

I want to ensure all students feel safe and have a sense of belonging in schools and the community.

What makes you the best candidate for the job?

I am the best candidate for the job because I am focused on student achievement, I want to work collaboratively with the community, administration, and other board members.

Because of my experience in this community and the field of education I understand the challenges and needs of students, staff and families and I believe in transparency and accountability. I will follow the law and guidelines set forth for school board members ensuring the district stays compliant on the right track for success.

What’s one good idea you have to better your district that no one is talking about yet?

To better the district I would like to enhance Career Exploration Workshops, mentorships, and Internships with local businesses as well as grow innovative clubs like robotics, coding and entrepreneurship to better prepare students for their future.
