What is the most serious issue your community will face in the coming years and how should the city council respond to it?

The most exciting issue taking place, I believe, is the revitalization of the downtown area. Driving down Main Street, there is already a sense of a new beginning with the spruced-up water tower against some new facades and colorful artwork.

The City of West Chicago's award-winning comprehensive plan is underway, and there is a new innovative program in place to attract more businesses as well as facilitate renovations and preserve our beautiful historical buildings. The city’s economic development, comprehensive, and strategic plans are, in part, positioning West Chicago to have a stronger economic foundation, more and quality housing options, better job opportunities, and a beautified downtown.

The rate of momentum of this project will depend on some impacts outside of the city’s control, such as developers’ ability to secure loans during these economically difficult times. But West Chicago and its residents are worth the wait and the effort.

I believe the city council’s response going forward is to ensure the positive impact this should have on our community while mitigating financial or other concerns residents may have.

How would you describe the state of your community's finances? What should be the top priorities for spending during the next few years? Are there areas of spending that need to be curtailed?

I believe West Chicago is a very fiscally responsible town, so it’s hard to point out an area of spending that is not needed. Infrastructure projects have been an enormous focus in recent years and will be for years to come. Challenges have come in the form of drastic increases in construction materials and supply chain issues. As a result, some projects have to be spread out a little more than the city would prefer.

What do you see as the most important infrastructure project the community must address? Why and how should it be paid for? Conversely, during these uncertain economic times, what project(s) can be put on the back burner?

The Lead Service Line Replacement Project is a major undertaking and will actually be given priority and accelerated for early completion.

The city is looking to secure a low interest loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Our Community Park project is an area of spending that won’t necessarily be on a back burner, but completion will certainly be delayed due to some necessary financial planning.

Describe your experience working in a group setting to determine policy. What is your style in such a setting to reach an agreement and manage local government? Explain how you think that will be effective in producing effective actions and decisions with your city council.

I’ve been very fortunate to be involved with council members over my past term, who are articulate when discussing their stance or concerns, yet are respectful of other members’ opinions as well. I welcome hearing or being part of a debate before making a decision on a contested issue. There is also a great comfort level in standing firm on topics I feel strongly about.

What makes you the best candidate for the job?

Experience that includes six years on the plan commission and zoning board of appeals and one term as alderman. I also would like to continue to be a part of the city of West Chicago’s growing prosperity.

What’s one good idea you have to better the community that no one is talking about yet?

I would like to see a farmers market as a regular event in the city. I think the health benefits would be wonderful with fresh produce and other goods, as well as the good vibe of community pride and connection.
