Who had the top prep basketball performances of the week?
This edition of the High Five again honors the area’s top prep basketball performances of last week, including two girls who played Monday with a trip to the state semifinals on the line.
All five teams listed this week won either regional or sectional titles.
5. Charlie Pomis, Hersey
The Huskies claimed their first regional since 2008 with Friday’s victory over Barrington on the Broncos’ home court.
With Hersey trailing 42-40 early in the fourth quarter, the 6-foot-3 junior scored seven straight points to give his team the lead for good.
Pomis led the Huskies with 19 points. He also scored a team-high 13 points in a semifinal win over Buffalo Grove.
The fourth-seeded Huskies face No. 1 Fremd in Tuesday’s Class 4A Schaumburg sectional semifinals.
4. Makenna Yeager, Glenbard West
The Hilltoppers stunned their way to their first sectional title since 1999, beating top-seeded St. Charles East and No. 2 Batavia last week.
The senior, who missed several weeks after breaking a hand in early January, made seven of eight shots while scoring 22 points in the sectional final. Yeager scored 14 points in the semifinals against the Saints, including the final three points of regulation to send the game to overtime.
3. Jacob Marynowski, Glenbard East
I wanted to get Marynowski in here for a couple reasons.
First, to congratulate the Rams on their first regional title since 2020. Second, the 6-3 junior tallied two interesting stat lines last week.
Marynowski had 16 points and 9 rebounds in the semifinals against Bartlett, then reversed it with 9 points and 16 rebounds in the regional final against Proviso East.
The No. 4 Rams play top-seeded Glenbard West in Tuesday’s Class 4A St. Charles East sectional semifinals.
2. Savannah Lynch, St. Edward
Behind Lynch, a sophomore, the Green Wave earned their first sectional title since finishing in third place in Class 2A in 2017.
St. Edward topped Amboy 54-44 in the Class 1A Hinckley-Big Rock sectional final as Lynch scored 26 points. She also led her team with 16 points in the sectional semifinals against Yorkville Christian.
1. Freddy Hassan, Kaneland
The Knights won their second straight regional title last week and hit the 30-win mark for the first time in program history.
Hassan, a 6-7 senior, had 23 points and 14 rebounds in a 66-56 come-from-behind victory over Wheaton Academy in the final. He put up another double-double with 15 points and 12 boards in the semifinals against Plano.
Top-seeded Kaneland plays No. 7 Boylan Catholic in Wednesday’s Class 3A Rochelle sectional semifinals.
