Man gets 22 years in robbery of gambling cafe

A man who robbed a gambling café in Glendale Heights has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Odell Wright, 49, of Chicago, was sentenced Friday by DuPage County Judge Guerin. A jury found him guilty on Dec. 5 of aggravated robbery.

Wright was accused of robbing Stella’s Place, 2190 Bloomingdale Road, on April 26, 2023.

Wright had been playing a slot machine terminal for about 90 minutes and drinking a bottle of beer. He then approached an employee at the front counter, indicated he had a gun and ordered the worker to open a cash register and give him the money.

According to prosecutors, fingerprints on the beer bottle and DNA from it matched that of Wright. He was on federal probation in a bank robbery case.

He was arrested Oct. 13, 2023, and was detained pretrial.

Wright must serve at least 50% of the sentence before being eligible for parole. He received credit for the 1⅓ years he has spent in the DuPage County jail since his arrest.

Wright is appealing his conviction.
