Mount Prospect accuses Prestige of violating court-approved protocols

Mount Prospect has temporarily shut down operations at a local factory twice this month, amid ongoing complaints about foul-smelling emissions.

Odor-testing results from areas surrounding Prestige Feed Products, 431 Lakeview Court, also led the village to file an emergency motion in Cook County court as evidence in its ongoing litigation with the company.

Attorneys for the village and Prestige are scheduled to appear Jan. 28 before Judge Thomas More Donnelly. But the village is requesting an emergency hearing Thursday to introduce the new data.

The village says the evidence shows Prestige is violating court-approved operating protocols and corroborates complaints from neighboring residents and businesses.

Mount Prospect’s interim settlement agreement with the company provided for a third party to periodically test at various locations near the business using a Scentometer.

Readings taken Jan. 2 at an address in the 600 block of Middleton Lane in Des Plaines and Jan. 9 at the Park View Montessori School, 1601 Feehanville Drive, reached nearly twice the level that would be considered an objectionable odor nuisance in a residential area, according to the village.

The odors have generated complaints from residents and businesses in the area, including Prestige’s neighbors in the Kensington Business Center and across the street in Des Plaines’ Longford Glen subdivision.

One area resident logged a complaint saying that on the evening of Jan. 9, she was leaving a nearby café and “the entire parking lot smelled like cheese vomit.”
