Mount Prospect embraces cultural diversity with Diwali Awareness Day proclamation
In a community-focused thoughtful gesture that showcases Mount Prospect's dedication to inclusivity, Mayor Paul Hoefert has proclaimed Nov. 1 as Diwali Awareness Day.
This signifies a momentous acknowledgment of one of the most beloved festivals among the Indian and South Asian communities. Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, is observed worldwide by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists as a representation of hope, togetherness, and the victory of light over darkness.

In his address, Mayor Hoefert not only acknowledged the rich contributions of the Indian and South Asian American residents but also extended an inclusive invitation to all residents, regardless of faith. Malhotra added that cultural values and heritage are the roots that ground us, offering wisdom and strength through generations. When we share these with the next generation, we plant seeds of identity and pride, allowing them to grow with a deep sense of belonging and purpose. Malhotra further shared the foundation's mission to enhance cultural, economic and social ties between India and the United States, fostering partnerships that support a globally inclusive future. He expressed heartfelt thanks to Mayor Hoefert and the village board, saying, “By acknowledging this festival, you honor not only the Indian heritage but also a universal vision of unity and hope.”
