Man seriously injured in crash near Island Lake

A man was flown to a hospital after a head-on crash Thursday morning in the Island Lake area, officials said.

The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District responded to the crash near the Route 176 and Nish Road intersection in the Island Lake area around 7 a.m. First responders found “a serious crash involving a small SUV and a landscaper truck pulling a trailer” east of the intersection, said Alex Vucha, communication specialist for the fire protection district. The fire station is just west of the intersection.

The SUV driver was trapped and it took firefighters almost 20 minutes to free him. The man was flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries, Vucha said. The truck driver had minor injuries and was taken to Northwestern McHenry Hospital to be evaluated.

The road was closed in both directions for about two hours; the McHenry County sheriff’s office is investigating the crash.
