Oct. 13

Illinois Orchid Society Fall Show & Sale: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake-Cook Road, Glencoe. Presented by the Illinois Orchid Society, this show will feature artistically arranged table top displays from the rarest of species to cultivated hybrids. Individual orchids in 128 classes will vie for red, white, and blue ribbons. Twenty-five entries will receive “best of class” green ribbons, and the best-appointed plant in the show will receive the Chicago Horticultural Society Award from American Orchid Society judges. Oct. 14

Gardeners of Central Lake County — Composting: 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at CrossLife Evangelical Free Church. 431 W. Austin Ave., Libertyville. This presentation by the University of Illinois Extension, Lake County, covers a broad overview to get you started with outdoor composting and to help you address issues if you are already composting. Focusing on the home gardener, a wide range of topics will be addressed including the benefits of composting, the science of composting, the options you have to create compost and the uses of compost. Garden Club of Inverness Luncheon: On Thursday, Dec. 5, the Garden Club of Inverness will be hosting its annual holiday luncheon at Medinah Country Club with the theme “Sleigh Bells Ring.” The event will feature a silent auction, Christmas crafts, and a raffle in addition to a presentation on floral arrangements for the holidays.
