Schaumburg P. E. O honors member teachers

Schaumburg P.E.O. Chapter P-LK honored its four member teachers with a “teacher shower” Sept. 24 at Our Redeemer’s United Methodist Church in Schaumburg. Each of the honored guests took home a “goody basket” with supplies they could use as they work with pupils.

Recognized were Sarah Calderwood, special education; Maria McFeggan, literacy coach; and Kara Zielinski, speech pathologist — all based out of Enders-Salk Elementary School — and Jennifer Johnson, who teaches elementary education in Algonquin.

The baskets were filled with Post-it-notes, Kleenex, dry-erase markers and erasers, stickers, pens, sharpies, wet wipes, scissors and snacks.

After each of the teachers, shared what and where she teaches, P.E.O. members shared stories of their favorite (and least favorite) teachers, enjoyed snacks and socialized around tables decorated with children’s books and matching plush characters. Program Chairperson Connie Claybough, a retired teacher, coordinated the event.

In addition to the four actively employed teachers, Chapter P-LK has at least 18 members who were once teachers or who retired from education.

P.E.O. is a philanthropic educational organization for women founded in 1869. It has helped more than 122,000 women pursue educational goals by providing more than $415 million in grants, scholarships, awards, and loans.

P.E.O. welcomes new members.
