Man gets 25-year sentence in cellphone store robberies

A Chicago man has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for his role in a string of armed robberies of cellphone stores throughout Illinois, including trying to rob stores in Woodridge and Aurora.

Johnathan Byars, 26, was sentenced on July 16, according to a news release from Morris Pascual, acting U.S. attorney for the Northern Illinois District. Byars pleaded guilty in 2023 to robbery and firearm charges.

Byars and four other men robbed stores in Lansing, Bloomington, Rockford, Joliet, Coal City and Mokena in 2019 and 2020, according to the news release.
