Farmer dies in grain bin accident

GENOA, Ill. - Authorities in DeKalb County say a man has died after falling into a grain bin at a rural Genoa family farm.

The DeKalb County sheriff's office says crews pulled 73-year-old Leon Madey from the grain bin on Monday afternoon. Chief Deputy Gary Dumdie says police received a call earlier to report Madey missing. Dumdie says emergency responders arrived and found the man's unattended truck but couldn't locate him. Firefighters cut several holes in the corn bin to locate Madey.

Dumdie says the DeKalb County coroner was called. Sheriff's officials say Madey had been working with others to dislodge hardened corn inside the bin to prepare it for transport.

Dumdie says nearly two dozen agencies responded to the scene, some from suburban Chicago.

Genoa is about 25 miles southeast of Rockford.
