St. Raymond’s basketball team crowned conference champs

The St. Raymond School seventh-grade Gold boys basketball team recently won the 2012 Northwest Catholic Conference Championship with a 46-37 victory over St. Gilbert.

In addition to defeating St. Gilbert in tournament play, the seventh grade Saints beat St. Theresa to win the championship game in the St. Emily Tournament.

The Saints began the season 1-3, and then won 15 of 16 games before dropping three straight decisions. The team ended its season by winning its final five games to finish 21-7.

“I give the boys credit for picking themselves up, believing in themselves and what we were doing as a team,” said Jim Sherwood, Saints head coach, who along with assistants Brian Krause and Scott Shields led the team.

“It would have been easy to pack it in after losing those games. But they continued to work hard and get after it.

“I think the championship game was a good reflection of our season, especially when we played well,” continued Sherwood.

“Everyone contributed to our victory and everyone scored in that final game. We received many compliments on our team play. I’m very proud of that. We took a 17-11 halftime lead and fought off comebacks from St. Gilbert by displaying great poise, only turning the ball over three times in the second half, and timely free throw shooting.”
