Clerk's choice: Obey the law or quit
Regarding the letter from Sara Schmidt and marriage equality: The argument against marriage equality is driven by the assumption that being gay is a lifestyle choice. "The difference lies in the chosen lifestyle."
I can assure Ms Schmidt this is not a choice of a lifestyle, just like the African American, the redhead or anyone else, we have no choice in who we are when we are born. It is inherent to our DNA.
In other words, we are born gay. So, yes, marriage equality does have a strong tie to the racial inequality of the '50s, '60s and, yes, even today.
African Americans are born that way, Ms. Schmidt was born female, and gay people are born gay. Since being gay is part of our DNA, the issue becomes one of equal protection and due process under the Constitution.
Last June, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality. Marriage equality is the law of the land, and Kim Davis can support the law or resign her public post. She has no other choice.
