Blame Chicago for higher water rates
I read the short article in the Saturday Soapbox titled "Glass half full or half empty?" regarding the high water rate increases taking place in Arlington Heights. Unfortunately, you are only reporting part of the story. Yes, "our" suburban infrastructure is aging, which most suburbs have been addressing, but the real culprit for those high rate increases is that we are also paying for Chicago's aging infrastructure repairs. Chicago has been raising the water rate exorbitantly high over the past few years, passing along their infrastructure costs to the suburbs, so we pay for their repairs. Unfortunately, we have no choice but to pay as we get our water from Lake Michigan.
