Schaumburg Boomers return home with a win

MARION, Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers held off a ninth-inning rally by the Southern Illinois Miners to notch a 7-5 victory and capture the series.

A scoreless contest until the fifth, Schaumburg scored a pair of runs to grab the lead. Mike Schulze tallied a two-out RBI triple and Jordan Dean followed with an RBI single. Steve McQuail stretched the lead to 3-0 in the sixth with a homer on the first pitch of the frame. McQuail is the franchise leader in homers and rejoined the team this weekend. Southern Illinois broke through for a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth against starter Anthony Gomez, who worked a career best 5.1 innings to earn his first win as a pro. Jake Joyce induced an inning-ending double play ball in the frame to leave the tying run on third. Schaumburg added 4 more in the ninth and needed the insurance as the Miners were able to bring the winning run to the plate before Hideyoshi Otake finished off his second save.

Every member of the lineup logged at least 2 hits as the Boomers lashed out 13. McQuail, Schulze, Dean, and Alexi Colon picked up two each with Schulze and McQuail collecting a pair of RBIs. Schaumburg stole a season high four bases and did not commit an error in the victory.

The Boomers (8-11) return home Friday night to open a weekend series with the Frontier Greys. RHP Brett Mabry (0-1, 4.96) is scheduled to start against RHP Colin Feldtman (1-0, 0.84).
