Storm spoils O'Malley big day
Adam O'Malley was having a career-day for Elk Grove on Monday.
Unfortunately for the Grenadiers, it won't end up meaning much.
O'Malley had 3 hits, including a home run, and had driven in 5 runs. He also had pitched 1-hit ball through 4 innings at Rolling Meadows.
The senior watched as his team built a 12-0 lead with two outs in the top of the fifth - when disaster struck for Elk Grove.
The lightning detector sounded, and both teams retreated to safety as the storm clouds slowly moved in. After 20 minutes, a hard rain along with thunder and lightning began. About 15 minutes after that, the umpires called the game.
That means it will have to be replayed, starting from the beginning, Tuesday afternoon in Rolling Meadows. The two teams are also scheduled to meet Wednesday in Elk Grove.
"If you are on the winning side, it is tough to swallow," Elk Grove coach Terry Beyna said. "But what can you do? We would have liked to get a couple more outs. This will test everyone's depth."
O'Malley, who threw 42 pitches through four innings, will be available for Wednesday's game. The Grens also got a lift this week when pitcher Ty Lawson retuned from a leg injury.
Matt Wary also had 3 hits and 3 RBI for Elk Grove (17-8, 8-4) while Josh Bergbreiter had 3 hits and Brandon Post had 2 hits including a double.
"We are pretty lucky," said Rolling Meadows coach Jim Lindeman, whose team is 11-14, 7-5.
"But we didn't play very well. It may turn out different, it may not. We didn't play very well and they hit the ball all over the field on us."
Other MSL games that were interrupted by weather and re-starting at 4:30 p.m. today are Conant at Palatine, Fremd at Hoffman Estates, Barrington at Schaumburg and Hersey at Prospect.
Wheeling 4, Buffalo Grove 1 (5 inn.): Wheeling's Matt Vollmer tripled and drove in 2 runs and Nathan Cooney allowed only 1 unearned run in 5 innings as the Wildcats picked up a Mid-Suburban League baseball victory Monday.
Cooney struck out six and allowed 3 hits.
