Profit is only motive for bobcat hunters
Gov. Rauner should veto HB 352, the bobcat hunting and trapping bill on his desk. The only reason for this significant departure from Illinois' long-standing protection of these shy and elusive creatures, who pose no threat to people, is that pelt prices are up in the global market.
I would ask that Gov. Rauner examine the motivation behind this bill as well as who is going to benefit. Given the long-standing financial crisis in Illinois and the current possible shutdown of programs, why was the legislature spending time to draft, debate and vote on bill to kill wildlife? Because they have some constituents who are greedy and could care less about our native wildlife.
Bobcats are important members of the ecosystem, who keep rodents in check, and are even beneficial to farmers. Wildlife belongs to all of us in Illinois. They should not be sacrificed to commercialization that turns this public resource into private profit.
Please join me in urging the governor to veto this harmful legislation immediately.
