Maywood man gets 21 years in prison for Roselle armed robbery

A Maywood man has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for robbing a Roselle gas station last year.

George Johnson, 25, of the 1000 block of 16th Avenue, pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of armed robbery, the DuPage County state's attorney's office announced.

A co-defendant, 19-year-old Jerry Thomas Jr. of Chicago, is awaiting trial.

According to authorities, at 9:45 p.m. April 11, 2020, Johnson, Thomas and an unidentified accomplice entered the Shell station on Lake Street near Gary Avenue.

Johnson, who was holding a revolver, guarded the entrance while Thomas jumped over the counter, went to a room and grabbed the clerk, authorities allege. He then forced the clerk to open two cash registers and took $300, authorities said. The third person stole cigarettes.

Thomas was arrested that night, hiding under a van in a parking lot of a nearby hotel. Johnson was arrested several days later on a Lake County warrant, where he was charged with a March 30, 2020, armed robbery. He pleaded guilty to that robbery June 4 and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Johnson will have to serve at least 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole. He will serve the Lake and DuPage sentences concurrently.
