Plants and wildlife are the attractions on Volo Bog's guided tours

Tamaracks patiently waiting for warmer days, pitcher plants greening up, muskrat lodges visible in the marsh moat and sandhill cranes checking out territories.

They were among the attractions during Sunday's guided tours at Volo Bog State Natural Area in Ingleside.

"The bog is a beautiful place, full of various plants that you won't find anywhere else in Illinois," said Nina Denne, 15, of Arlington Heights as she assisted during a tour of the bog. "I'm glad that it gets the protection that we have here."

The one-hour tours on most Saturdays and Sundays are open to individuals, families and small groups of nine or fewer. No reservations are needed except groups of 10 or more.

Volo Bog will next feature Migratory Bird Days on Sunday, April 26, with many family activities, including bird-watching with spotting scopes, bird photography tips, mist netting and banding demo, children's games and fun walks.
