Local Fitness Center Supports Brain Tumor Research at NorthShore University HealthSystem

This summer, 9Round Northbrook, a local kickboxing fitness center, sponsored a walk to raise funds and awareness for brain tumor research in memory of the gym's close friend, Sandy Peterson, who lost her battle with the disease in 2013. Over 100 participants were in attendance, enjoying a day of remembrance with friends and family.

"It is a great feeling to be part of a community that rallies together to support one another," said Linda Mayer, co-owner of 9Round Northbrook. "We are already looking forward to planning next year's walk," she added.

The event raised over $2,500, a portion of which was graciously presented to Ryan Merrell, MD, a physician-scientist who focuses on brain tumor research at NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore). Dr. Merrell concentrates on treating patients with brain tumors, neurological complications of cancer, and tumors in the central nervous system. Currently, Dr. Merrell is studying different drugs and how they improve the overall survival rate in patients.

"Through generous donations, such as the one from 9Round Northbrook, we are able to fund on-going research projects that aim to improve brain cancer patients' quality of life," stated Dr. Merrell.
