Driver hurt after car crashes through West Chicago garage
A man was flown to an area hospital Friday morning after the car he was driving left a West Chicago road, struck the side of a house and then continued into and through a garage, authorities said.
West Chicago police did not identify the driver, but said he was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. They said they did not know his condition.
No other people were in the car and no one was home at the time of the crash, police said.
Police said the man was driving his four-door Nissan sedan south on Oakwood Avenue about 9:30 a.m. when it left the road and entered the property on the 400 block of Colford Avenue near downtown. At some point the car flipped over and came to rest on its roof.
Emergency crews were dispatched at 9:37 a.m. and the driver had to be extricated from the wreckage.
Nearby resident Brad Janssen said he heard a “big bang” when the crash occurred. Another neighbor, Kim Collier, said she saw the car on its roof and fire in the garage.
“(I) came outside, heard a bunch of sirens. Had to come over and take a look. Went behind the house, saw all the firefighters — about 30 firefighters behind there, wenching the car out of the garage,” Janssen said.
Police said their investigation is continuing. They said they have made no determination as to the vehicle's speed before the crash or any possible traffic violations.
A building inspector from the city's community development department was expected to decide Friday about whether the house is habitable.
