Auto Club to install more SAFER barriers after NASCAR race

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) - Auto Club Speedway plans to add more SAFER barriers, but not until after next week's NASCAR race.

The California track said Thursday it will add tire barriers inside Turn 1 before next weekend. Denny Hamlin broke his back in 2013 when he hit a concrete wall, and a soft wall has since been added where Hamlin hit.

Auto Club will begin SAFER barrier installation along the frontstretch and backstretch walls that are currently uncovered after next Sunday's race. The walls are expected to be completed before NASCAR returns in 2016. It's not clear how much will be done before IndyCar's visit in June.

Tracks are reviewing their safety standards following Kyle Busch's February crash at Daytona. He hit a concrete wall and broke his right leg and left foot.
