New Schaumburg dog park could run out of room fast
A dog park more than two years in the making is set to open this fall in Schaumburg, but pet owners who want their dogs to enjoy the new facility should act soon or risk missing out, officials said Monday.
The K-9 Dog Park, at 120 Remington Road, will be a leash-free, 6.5-acre space with features that include a large pond with a specially designed ramp to help the dogs get in and out of the water easily. Other planned amenities include a gazebo, several park benches and water fountains for dogs and their owners.
The park also will feature separate areas for small dogs and big dogs.
Pat Casler, communication director for the Schaumburg Park District, said many of the amenities were purchased through the Schaumburg Park Foundation, the district's fundraising arm.
Only dogs whose owners have properly registered will be allowed in the park, and there is a limit of 500 registrations available. Registration begins Sept. 4 for residents and Oct. 1 for nonresidents, if there are spots left.
Along with a completed registration form, available on the park district website, applicants must provide proof of up-to-date vaccines for several diseases, including rabies and hepatitis. Registered owners will be issued a key ring tag that will provide electronic access to the park, and each dog will be issued a tag for its collar. Owners can register a maximum of four dogs.
Casler said the idea for the park came partially from feedback the park district received from residents in two recent citizen surveys.
“Dog parks are extremely popular in the area, and in the most recent survey residents voiced the need for one in Schaumburg,” Casler said.
The dog park will be sponsored by Golf Rose Animal Hospital, which will be involved with the programs at the park, Casler said. She said the hospital provides all of the shots required in the registration process, which will make the process easier for residents.
The dog facility, at Copley Park near the intersection of Remington and Wilkening roads, is set to open in early October, but an official start date has yet to be announced. Dog owners who register with the park district will receive notification of the park's opening via email.
The registration fee for residents will be $60 for the first dog and $10 for each additional dog. Nonresidents will be charged $110 for the first dog and $20 for each additional dog.
