Fire causes $100,000 damage to Schaumburg duplex
Fire caused an estimated $100,000 damage to a duplex unit in Schaumburg on Wednesday.
Firefighters were called about 12:10 p.m. by a resident on the 900 block of Walpole Lane on the village's southwest side for a fire in a laundry room that possibly had started during construction, Schaumburg fire Capt. Frank Chambers said,
Residents “believed they had put it out,” but firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the roof soffits and vents and called for a response, Chambers said.
The fire had spread from the laundry room to the garage and attic space over the first floor, Chambers said. Nine fire trucks responded and the fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes and contained to the front portion of the duplex unit.
Chambers said one of the residents was treated at the scene for a cut but did not require hospitalization. No other injuries were reported.
The unit was deemed uninhabitable by village building inspectors but the occupants of the adjoining residence were allowed back, Chambers said. The cause is under investigation, he added.
