Learn to make super snacks for the Super Bowl
What will you be eating while you sit on the couch in front of your wide screen TV on Super Bowl Sunday? Nachos and chili, or maybe some pizza rolls?
Super Bowl food doesn’t have to be boring. Learn to move beyond the same old chips and dip and pick up some tips for creative snacking at “Super Snacks for the Super Bowl,” a Daily Herald subscriber event.
The event, set for 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva, will feature Daily Herald food editor Deb Pankey and 2013 Cook of the Week Challenge Champion Dan Rich. Pankey and Rich will demonstrate how to make simple and delicious appetizers using typical pantry items — some of which are the most commonly donated to the food pantry.
“Our event with the Northern Illinois Food Bank celebrates this American tradition, but also reminds us that not all suburban families enjoy the same creature comforts or know where their next meal will come from,” Pankey said.
“Dan (Rich) and I will show people how to turn ingredients found on food bank shelves, and probably in most suburban pantries — things like canned beans and tomatoes, tuna and peanut butter — into fun, football-friendly food.”
A variety of recipes will be demonstrated and shared, Pankey said.
“We’re putting our own twist on hummus and potato skins, chicken wings and meatballs and a few more,” Pankey said.
Enjoy appetizers from Altiro Latin Fusion, a Geneva restaurant, during the demonstrations. Guests who arrive early will have the opportunity to tour the facility at Northern Illinois Food Bank before the demonstrations begin.
Best of all, the event is free, although guests are asked to bring a shelf-stable item to donate to the food bank, if possible.
