Join Hope for Haitians 5K Walk/Run May 9

Join the Hope for Haitians 5K Walk/Run for Education on Saturday, May 9, at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31) in Geneva.

The race will begin at 8:30 a.m., with registration, activities and food starting at 7:30 a.m.

New this year: those running will be chipped, and there will be a special Kids Race after the conclusion of the 5K.

Medallions will be presented to the top finishers in each category. These medallions are handmade in Haiti.

All proceeds from the event will go toward educating the children of the villages that have been built.

Registration for those 13 and older is $25 or $30 on day of race. Children under age 13 are free. Participants receive a T-shirt and goody bag. Breakfast is provided for participants and their families.

Since 2001, Hope for Haitians has worked to bring clean water, food, housing, education and medical services to Haiti, home to more than nine million people and considered to be the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

While helping to meet the basic needs of Haitians for housing and clean water, Hope for Haitians also creates sustainable solutions for continued self-sufficiency and provides education programs to prepare the next generation. Since the organization started, the group has established:

• Clean water sources for more than 270,000 people;

• 350 homes for families formerly living in complete destitution;

• Tilapia ponds for a sustainable source of nutritious protein;

• Livestock program as an income and food source;

• Reforestation projects.
