Longmeadow: How far in debt to go?

Considering the fiscal condition of the state and county, a colossal project like Longmeadow Toll Bridge should be considered out of the question at this time. How far in debt do we want to go?

Only with overwhelming public support should such a burden be borne. Such is not the case with Longmeadow. Voters have consistently supported referendums for open space. The proposed four-lane road would go right through a forest preserve.

Since the Longmeadow was proposed, the Algonquin bypass has been built. The timing of the traffic light at state Routes 31 and 62 can now favor east-west traffic more than before.

Some 20 years ago a bridge initiative at the north end of Elgin failed. The will of the people prevailed. Hopefully, the Longmeadow Toll Bridge will meet the same fate.
