Schaumburg Boomers ride strong effort to win
The Schaumburg Boomers rode another strong effort from Brett Mabry on the mound to a 4-2 victory over the Gateway Grizzlies on Sunday.
Mabry worked 7 innings for the fourth consecutive start, all of which have been wins for the Boomers. The righty allowed just a single earned run while matching a career high with 8 strikeouts, improving to 7-3 on the season. Schaumburg led 2-0 in the second on a 2-run single from Cam Sherrer. Gateway was able to tie the score with runs in the third and fourth. South Elgin native John Menken singled home the go-ahead run in the fifth and Ryan Brockett added a run-scoring single in the sixth to account for the offense.
Hideyoshi Otake and Clark Labitan worked perfect innings out of the bullpen to preserve the win. Labitan notched his sixth save of the season. Sherrer finished with 3 hits with Brockett and TJ Bennett each posting a pair.
The Boomers (37-53) open the final home series of the season on Tuesday against the Washington Wild Things.
