Contractors took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather Thursday to make quick work of a village-owned ranch house in Schaumburg that's making way for a potential new business.
The village's goal is to demolish the approximately 60-year-old house at 35 E. Schaumburg Road and clear the site before the first snowfall of the season.
Schaumburg bought the house for $590,000 in 2008 with the aim of ultimately replacing it with a business with architecture matching the style of the surrounding Olde Schaumburg Centre historic district.
The seven-year delay before the Thursday's demolition was due to the village allowing the house's original owner to continue living there until she was no longer able. The resident moved out during the summer, and the village took possession of the property shortly after.
The village last month hired Copenhaver Construction of Gilberts to raze the house and then restore the site for $34,900.
The house's utilities, water well and asbestos tiles had already been removed by the start of the demolition.
No specific business has yet been identified for the newly vacant half-acre site.
