Hoffman Estates man killed when SUV collides with ambulance

A 64-year-old Hoffman Estates man died Sunday from injuries suffered when his SUV veered into oncoming traffic along Route 59 in Streamwood and collided with an ambulance, police said.

Jitendra Shah was pronounced dead at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, where he was taken after the crash also which left his 53-year-old passenger hospitalized in serious condition and injured three others.

Streamwood police said the crash occurred about 4:07 p.m. Sunday as Shah was driving a 2005 Honda CR-V south on Route 59 near Tallgrass Court. Police said the vehicle crossed into northbound traffic and was struck by a private ambulance operated by the Trace Ambulance Company.

The three occupants of the ambulance were transported to St. Alexius with nonlife threatening injuries, police said.

Streamwood police and the Major Case Assistance Team Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction team is investigating the crash. Weather and road conditions may have been a factor, police said Monday.
