Fast start for Fremd against Deerfield

Fremd, last year's Class 4A girls basketball state runner-up, opened its season on Wednesday night with a 75-26 victory over visiting Deerfield in the opening round of the Turkey Thriller Tournament.

The host Vikings were led by Bryana Hopkins (13 points, 5 rebounds), Grace Tworek (11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 blocks, 4 steals, 3 assists) and Julia Wacker (11 points, 6 rebounds) as they sped to a 17-2 lead after one quarter.

Other top scorers for the three time defending Mid-Suburban League champs were Amanda McCartney (9 points, 3 assists), Erin Lenahan (8 points, 3 steals) and Brianna Lewis (8 points, 4 assists, 4 steals).

Teammate Jenna Simios grabbed 5 rebounds.

"It was a good first game," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "We had good balance. We shot well from the 3-point line. And we rebounded the ball well. But well still have a lot to work on."

Rolling Meadows 58, Lakes 40: Host Rolling Meadows (1-0) was led by Kyra Spiwak (16 points, 5 assists), Megan King (13 points) and Hannah Mickey (8 points, 11 rebounds) as it won its first game in the Turkey Thriller.

King had three 3-pointers and teammate Katherine Nolan had one.

Lake Zurich 49, Elk Grove 27: Sarah Pauscher led the host Grenadiers in their season opener in the Turkey Thriller Tournament with 6 points while teammates Abbey Sloan, Alex Masnica and Mackenzie Flannery each had 5.

St. Viator 51, Dundee-Crown 44: Jason Raymond won his coaching with St. Viator as the Lions were led by sophomore Myia Clark, who scored a game-high 18 points with a pair of 3-pointers in the opening round of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament.

Classmates Olivia Solimene added 11 and Haley Robinson 8.

Palatine 34, Jacobs 21: Coach Mark Johnson's Pirates got off to winning start at the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament.

Palatine was led by senior Geena Eliades (8 point), senior Ashley Shapiro (6) and freshman Elena Porrata (5).

The Pirates (1-0) will return to action on Friday at 8:30 p.m. against the host Chargers.
