Smith’s big effort lifts Vernon Hills

Sydney Smith dropped in a game-high 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, and Vernon Hills’ girls basketball team won its third straight game Thursday night, defeating host Lakes 54-32.

Vernon Hills improved to 14-5 and 5-2 in the North Suburban Conference Prairie Division. The two-time defending NSC Prairie champs host first-place Antioch at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Smith hit three 3-pointers. Katie Brettman chipped in 7 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for Vernon Hills.

Alexis Lee scored 8 points for Lakes, which fell to 3-16 and 1-5 in the division. Ellie Haviland added 7.
