Conant gets the bats going
Senior Hailey Rothstein and sophomore Lauren Grzelak each belted a home run and a double for defending Mid-Suburban League softball champion Conant in a 15-5 victory over visiting Maine South on Wednesday.
Rothstein was 2-for-2 with 5 RBI while Grzelak was 3-for-3 with 4 runs and 3 RBI.
Senior Kim Zaucha (1-0) earned the win and also belted a double.
Senior Stephanie Taucher also doubled while going 2-for-3 with 2 runs as the Cougars raised their record to 2-0.
Fremd 13, Prairie Ridge 2: Senior Julie Josten was 2-for-3 with a home run, 4 RBI and 2 runs for the host Vikings who improved to 2-0.
Other top hitters for the Vikings were sophomore Becca Uhrich (2-for-4, 3 RBI), junior Alyssa Garcia (2-for-3, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and sophomore Reagan Schneider (double).
Lea Barrett (1-0) picked up the win, allowing 2 hits in the first four innings. Jessica Mazur threw the fifth inning for Fremd.
Maine West 4, Glenbrook North 3 (10 innings): Mike McGovern, who won more than 560 games on the Division I college circuit as the Illinois-Chicago coach, picked up his first win on the high level as the Warriors outlasted CSL North rival Glenbrook North in 10 innings.
Allison Pearson and Alyssa Pegoraro each homered for the Warriors while Annemarie Weber had a double in the seventh place game of Barrington's Spring Fling.
Sophomore pitcher Grace Feldkamp earned the win in relief.
Taft 5, Rolling Meadows 1: Junior Megan King went 2-for-3 with a RBI for host Rolling Meadows in its season opener.
