17th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta takes place Sunday
It will be another wet and wild Sunday as the Fox Lake Parks & Recreation Department presents its 17th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta Sunday, Aug. 17, at the village's Lakefront Park on Nippersink Road.
This year's event is also sponsored by the Jacob Leinenkugel's Brewing Company, and will officially begin at 8 a.m. for on-site boat building. Competitors can either choose to build on-site at the Lakefront Park or off-site at their own location.
The categories this year are ages 10 and under, ages 11-14, ages 15-20, and adults 21 and older. There is also a business category for sponsored boats.
The race is at noon and each participant is required to bring their own life vest and a paddle to propel the boat.
Medals will be given to all children that race in a boat. Trophies will be awarded for first and second place in each category, along with Best in Show and Fastest Sinking.
There are no restrictions on the length of the boat or crew size; the only restrictions is that no wood, foam or plastic should be used when building the boat. Boats may only be covered with cardboard, duct tape and paint.
Registration and a boat building kit are $30. Kits are available at the Fox Lake village hall during business hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
There will be food and beverages for sale at the event.
