Metea student disciplined following fight with South Elgin student

Indian Prairie Unit District 204 administrators say they believe they've identified the student involved in a Friday night fight that injured a South Elgin High School basketball player after an Upstate Eight Conference game in Aurora.

Authorities said the victim, Matt Smith, a 16-year-old basketball player, said he was assaulted by several males thought to be Metea Valley High School players after the game between the two teams. The South Elgin junior required three stitches over his eye.

Indian Prairie spokeswoman Janet Buglio said Tuesday a Metea student already has been disciplined in connection with the case, but she would not specify what that punishment involves.

“School administrators are cooperating fully with the Aurora police in their investigation,” Buglio said. “At this point, school administrators believe the fight involved only one Metea Valley student. Student discipline action has been taken.”

Buglio wouldn't provide any information about the disciplined student, including whether he was involved in Friday night's game.

Aurora investigators would not comment on the status of the investigation Tuesday other than to confirm they are still reviewing video from the scene.
