Fremd wins own sectional
Fremd's girls badminton team won its own sectional Thursday night with a score of 16 points, finishing ahead of Hoffman Estates (10.5), Palatine (7.5), Streamwood (5.5), Geneva (4) and St. Charles North (1).
The state singles qualifiers at Fremd were senior Sindhuja Battula (Fremd), junior Kristy Toondarack (Streamwood), senior Tiffany Lim (Hoffman Estates) and senior Masarrat Fatima (Hoffman Estates).
Doubles qualifiers were senior Suzi Choi and junior Stephanie MBI (Fremd), senior Sunny Shah and senior Alice Zhang (Fremd), senior Melissa Hank and sophomore Samantha Ortiz (Palatine) and senior Alice Kim and senior Roshni Patel (Hoffman Estates).
Glenbard North sectional: Schaumburg's Ryan Shope and Wasinee Siewsrichol advanced to state by taking third and fourth place in singles play.
The Saxons also had a sectional champ in junior Dhun Patel and senior Emily Knipp, who topped Glenbard North's Jen Kraco and Maggie Mundall for the title.
Glenbard North won the team title with 16.5 points; Schaumburg finished with 11.5 and Barrington was third at 7.5.
Aayushi Patel and Bhavana Bheem advanced for Conant with a fourth-place doubles finish.
New Trier sectional: The Trevians won their own sectional with 16.5 points, followed by Deerfield (12.5), Maine East (7.5), Maine West (6.5), Wheeling (1) and Senn (0).
Lake Park sectional: Host Lake Park led the pack with 15 points followed by Glenbard West (11.5), South Elgin (7), Rolling Meadows (4.5), McHenry (4) and Elgin (3.5).
Qualifying for state was the Rolling Meadows' doubles team of senior Emily Mrstik and senior Bridget Dungan.
