Police: Cary man barricaded in home surrenders

A man who barricaded himself inside a house in the 300-400 block of Hillhurst Drive peacefully surrendered to Cary police Wednesday afternoon, according to witnesses.

The man was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.

About 2:30 p. m. witnesses heard a large burst that sounded possibly like a single gunshot.

Apparently, the man, in his 30s, had barricaded himself in the attic and his mother was talking to police outside assuring them that there were no weapons in the house, witnesses said.

Authorities, suspecting weapons in the house, had a tactical team with snipers in place donning gas masks and riot shields earlier Wednesday afternoon.

Several area police departments assisted as part of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System response team.

The neighborhood had been cordoned off, but residents are now being let back in and the streets are open.

Police confirmed there were no weapons in the house, but they had to take precautions.

It was not an attempted suicide and no crime was committed, according to Cary Police Chief Pat Finlon.
