Science Academy to host STEAM Expo May 9

The Science Academy of Chicago will host its annual Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) Expo from 10am - 12pm along with an school open house from 11am - 2pm on Saturday, May 9 at 501 Midway Drive in Mount Prospect. The purpose of the expo is to provide a venue for students from preschool through ninth grade to showcase their STEAM related projects and experiments to their peers and community.

"We have 180 young scientists who will present their amazing science, math, and technology projects at the Expo," said Hamit Yilmaz, science teacher. "Students have been working on their projects for more than two months. They improved their presentations skills while discovering new science concepts."

The expo will feature hands on demonstrations and experiments along with award winning science projects from local and regional competitions including the Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS), First Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotic competitions and the Future City Competition.

"I am excited to share our Future City model with the rest of the local community," said 7th grader Aysesule Gulen. "I look forward to telling everyone about the ideas and the concepts behind Future City."

The Future City model created by the students was awarded the Peer Award and the Best Name for a Community award at competition.

The hallways of the school will be transformed into an art canvas featuring art projects that students have created throughout the academic year.

"This year's art show will feature work incorporating many different media and techniques created by kindergarten to 9th grade students." said Natalya Sturlis, art teacher. "Students have been making and looking at art from many different cultures and medium and have created some of the best work yet."

This family oriented events seeks to inspire youth to pursue a career in STEAM related fields and to introduce the private school to the local community. The art exhibit will be available through May 15.
