Middle school students compete in 2024 Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee

Five sixth through eighth grade students, representing three area junior highs and middle schools, competed in the 42nd annual Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee held Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Arlington Heights.

The first place finisher was Anagha Prasad of Thomas Middle School in Arlington Heights. The second place finisher was Alaina Prinz also of Thomas Middle School; and the third place finisher was Sarah Kreiner from St. Peter Lutheran School in Arlington Heights. The Bee lasted an exciting 26 rounds.

All three finalists have qualified to compete in the Regional Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee on March 2, in Mount Prospect, where they can then qualify for the state tournament at the end of March.

Schools and students participating in this year’s Spelling Bee were: St. James Junior High School: Thaddeus Gilbert and Jonah Ulahanan; St. Peter Lutheran School: Sarah Kreiner; and Thomas Middle School: Anagha Prasad and Alaina Prinz.

The Bee was hosted by Holy Rosary Council #4483 of Arlington Heights, and co-sponsored with Our Lady of the Grove Council #13448. All public and private junior high schools and middle schools serving Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Rolling Meadows, and Wheeling were invited to send two representatives to participate.
