District 87 awards

Glenbard High School District 87 has announced these students who competed and brought home honors.

Chess: Glenbard South High School's chess team from Glen Ellyn recently finished second in Blitz, speed chess, in the U.S. Chess Federation Youth Action Chess Tournament in St. Louis.

Class prizes were awarded to Mike Yabut with a first in the unrated division; Kalina Kassadjikova with third in unrated; Jon Prapuolenis with first in the under 1,000 division; and first to Zak Johnson in the 1,000 to 1,200 division.

The freshman team of Yabut, David McWilliams, Matt Traynor, Boris Boguslavsky and Pat Clark took eighth place in the K-9 tournament.

The upper-class team of Prapuolenis, Johnson, Michael Wurtz, Robert Miller, Kassadjikova, John Larkin, Andrew Dunne and Jon Linsner took eighth place in the K-12 tournament.

Miller and Prapuolenis finished fourth in Bughouse team chess.

Forensics: The Glenbard West Forensics Team from Glen Ellyn made strong showings Dec. 1. The junior varsity team placed second at Hersey High School, and the varsity team took first place at Elk Grove.

Award winners for the junior varsity were Grace Carey, M.E. Barker, Alex Cooper, Cory Evans, Billy Swanson, Eric Baker, Travis Marmoll, Ellen Barry, Riley Cook, Adin Lykken, Sarah DelCiello, Mickie Anderson, Kathleen Nannenhorn, Annie Larsen, Mickie Anderson, John Kalita, Annie Wood and Abbie Reifel.

Tournament champs were Grace Lavery and Madeline Hall.

Varsity award winners at Elk Grove were David Fontana, Nick Agro, Kevin McFadden, Elizabeth Buckton, Michael Lopesciolo, Mark Campbell, Austin Waters, Hank Clauss, Kristin Perkins, Luke Stewart, Melissa Zelko, Nate Sivak, Phoebe Duvall, Claire Fey, Alana Dion and Mitch Bley.

Tournament champions were Luke Stewart and Kristin Perkins in dramatic duet acting and Christy Gaylord, tournament champion in both special occasion speaking and prose reading.

• Glenbard South High School's Forensics Team from Glen Ellyn had a second-place finish at the Crystal Lake South Invitational Dec. 1.

The team took home 10 medals, including Linzi Johnston and C.J. Vana as tournament champions in dramatic duet acting; Shannon Curtis with third place in dramatic interpretation; Amarto Bhattacharyya with third place in extemporaneous speaking and second place in impromptu speaking; Krystal Fowlkes with third place in oratorical declamation and verse reading; Leigh Anna Hudson with a second in original oratory; Linzi Johnston with a second in prose reading; Monica Guio as tournament champion in radio speaking; and David Vidal with a third in special occasion speaking.

Math: Glenbard South High School's math team took first place at the Western Sun Conference Math Meet Nov. 28 at North Central College in Naperville.

With 425 points, Glenbard South beat second-place Geneva with 371 points and third-place Batavia with 281 points.

Out of 48 written competitions, Glenbard South's team achieved 29 perfect scores. The team took 11 first places, two second places, and two third places. The team placed in all 15 events.
