Two more Hawks injured

The injuries are starting to stack up for the Blackhawks.

Defensemen James Wisniewski and Brent Sopel were the latest to go down in Wednesday night's 5-2 victory over Nashville.

Wisniewski will be lost for at least 4-6 weeks pending an MRI with a knee-ligament injury suffered in a fight with the Predator's Jordin Tootoo as time expired.

Sopel left the game in the first period with what is believed to be a broken left middle finger.

"I'm happy about the win but disappointed a couple guys are banged up," Hawks coach Denis Savard said.

Wisniewski and Sopel got hurt on the same day the Hawks placed Martin Havlat, Dave Bolland and Ben Eager on the injured reserve list.

Savard said Havlat would be sidelined at least another week with a groin injury, while Bolland is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a broken finger that might require surgery. He was hurt blocking a shot against Edmonton on Sunday.

Eager suffered a mild concussion in the win over the Oilers and is out indefinitely.

Center Martin St. Pierre and winger Mike Blunden were recalled from Rockford and in the lineup against the Predators. The Hawks did get some good news with Rene Bourque returning a few days early from his broken thumb.

The injuries certainly are testing the organization's depth.

"We have good depth, but at the same time we can't just keep having guys getting hurt," Savard said. "There's a lot of things that happen during the course of the season, especially with us -- we've been unlucky with injuries, blocking shots and things like that.

"That's the way hockey goes, I guess. You've got to fight through these things and move on."

St. Pierre was promoted after accumulating 39 points in 29 games for Rockford.

"From what I understand, not only from our management side of it but from other people around the league, they said he's the best player in the league now," Savard said.

St. Pierre re-signed with the Hawks after starting the season in Russia before deciding it wasn't the right place for him.

"I guess it wasn't what I expected," St. Pierre said.

Havlat frustrated: Another injury has Martin Havlat in a sour mood.

"We'll see how long it's going to go this time," Havlat said. "I'm very disappointed. That's a nice word for it."

Havlat underwent an MRI on his groin and there were no tears.

"It's not the worst-case scenario, that's for sure," he said.

Talking TV: The United Center was packed to the rafters Wednesday night even though the game was televised locally.

The Hawks continue to have discussions about TV options for next season that include showing some games on free television.

"Our goal is to have every game televised," president John McDonough said Wednesday on WSCR 670-AM.
