ADOPT hosts new kind of card party

Helping defenseless animals down on their luck was something Julie Piesciuk knew she wanted to do.

"I had the idea of doing what I can to help animal charities in the area," said Piesciuk, a Bartlett resident.

Piesciuk and her husband, Ray, have a rabbit and a ferret, and she said they'd like others to experience the joys of pet ownership.

She did some research and came upon Animals Deserving of Proper Treatment, a Naperville-based organization that operates a shelter and finds homes for thousands of homeless cats and dogs each year.

When Piesciuk approached ADOPT with her idea, she was warmly welcomed, she said.

Piesciuk, a rubber-stamp artist, will show ADOPT shelter visitors how to make animal-themed greeting cards from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

"I'm going to have a table there," she said. "There's going to be a make-and-take."

For a $1 donation, visitors can learn to make a rubber-stamped greeting card by actually making one on the spot, she said.

Visitors also will be able to order from Piesciuk's catalog. Piesciuk is an independent demonstrator for Stampin' Up!, an international stamp company.

"If they purchase something out of my catalog, I donate 100 percent of the net proceeds back to ADOPT," she said.

The shelter also will be open for animal adoptions from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, said ADOPT's Sandy Boston. Boston said about 100 cats and 50 dogs currently are housed at the shelter. ADOPT also has a variety of other animals available for adoption that are housed in foster homes.

Boston said funds raised by Piesciuk's program will support ADOPT's animal-saving activities.

"We'll most likely use it to defray our costs and most of our costs are veterinary," Boston said.

Piesciuk said she hopes her visit to the Naperville shelter is as successful as her recent stamping card party at Save A Pet shelter in Grayslake.

And she hopes she can help other animal organizations with her stamping talents, she said.

"I'm an animal lover," she said.
