Nursing program needs expansion

Elgin Community College (ECC) currently accepts only 80 qualified students in the nursing program. Nursing administration ranks the students depending on their National League for Nursing (NLN) scores and their overall academic standing.

Every semester, more than 100 students are being rejected or placed on the waiting list. Enrollment of the nursing program is not growing fast enough to meet the demand for nurses.

There were a lot of people who migrated here to work as a nurse, and yet the United States is still facing a health care crisis.

The problem is that the ECC nursing program is too small due to shortage of faculty and budget constraints.

I urge the head of the ECC health professionals to increase the number of qualified students who can get accepted in the program.

Local health care facilities should donate finds to the ECC nursing program. They could also benefit by contracting with ECC students to work for them for at least a year.

These two solutions will help our country to fill the shortage for nurses.
