Global warming action is topic of rally in Woodstock
Local citizens will join Greenpeace to highlight the need for congressional action on global warming at 1 p.m. Saturday on the Woodstock Square.
Scientific consensus has determined that the world must start reducing greenhouse emissions by the year 2015 in order to avoid the catastrophic impacts of global warming.
Local residents will take part in a visual action and formation to communicate an important message to Rep. Melissa Bean of the Eighth Congressional District about global warming: Time is running out!
Several dozen activists will stand in visual formations with uniform shirts and timepiece props, along with a banner to make the message of urgency clear to the congresswoman.
Photos will be taken and delivered to Bean to show that her constituents are urging her to take action in Washington on this critical issue.
In addition to the event in Woodstock, activists at demonstrations around the world will call on their leaders during this international day of action.
The events will shine a bright light on the next phase of international agreements to limit global warming emissions in Bali in Indonesia, a process in which U.S. involvement is considerably muted. Bean must play a strong role in pushing the U.S. toward leadership on global warming, Greenpeace believes.
Speakers include state Sen. Pam Althoff and Mike Shipley, a local activist and owner of Conscious Cup.
